what You need to know about NDIS

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian government program that provides funding and support to people living with a permanent and significant disability. Its goal is to give participants more choice and control over the supports and services they receive, helping them to build independence, achieve goals, and take part in everyday life.

Through the NDIS, individuals can access a wide range of supports, such as personal care, community participation, therapies, and equipment, tailored to their unique needs and circumstances.

To access the NDIS, you need to meet certain requirements set by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). These include:

1. Age Requirements

  • You must be under 65 years of age when you apply.

  • If you’re over 65, you may be able to access support through aged care programs instead.

2. Residency Requirements

  • You must live in Australia and be one of the following:

    • An Australian citizen, or

    • A permanent resident, or

    • A Protected Special Category Visa (SCV) holder.

3. Disability Requirements

  • You have a disability caused by a permanent condition (something that won’t go away).

  • Your disability significantly affects how you take part in everyday activities — such as moving around, communicating, learning, or caring for yourself.

  • You need help from other people, equipment, or special supports to do daily tasks.

4. Early Intervention Requirements

  • Even if your disability is not yet permanent, you may be eligible if early supports could reduce the impact of your condition in the future.

If you meet these criteria, you may qualify to become an NDIS participant and access funding for supports and services tailored to your needs.

Applying for the NDIS is a simple process, and support is available along the way.

1. Check your eligibility
Make sure you meet the requirements: under 65 years old, live in Australia as a citizen, permanent resident or Protected Special Category Visa holder, and have a permanent and significant disability.

2. Get an Access Request Form
You can request this form by calling the NDIA on 1800 800 110, visiting your local NDIS or partner office, or downloading it from the NDIS website.

3. Provide supporting information
Your application should include details about your disability and how it affects your daily life. Reports from doctors, specialists, or allied health professionals can help.

4. Submit your application
Send your completed form and supporting documents to the NDIA.

5. NDIA decision
The NDIA will review your application and let you know if you are eligible. If approved, you’ll be contacted to arrange your first planning meeting.
